karamazov urged me to complete a top ten album list. Honestly, I'd rather do a top ten song list, as I rarely listen to albums as albums any more. But I'll defer: here's a top ten album list, and though I didn't put very much time into it, I feel it's fairly accurate:
10. Iron & Wine - Our Endless Numbered Days

9. The Postal Service - Give Up

(What the fuck ever. It's not a great album, but I've always been able to listen to the whole thing straight through, regardless of my mood, which I think is a pretty high distinction.)
8. Regina Spektor - Begin to Hope

7. Belle & Sebastian - Dear Catastrophe Waitress

(I'll probably get shit for not picking Tigermilk or Sinister, but I genuinely enjoy this album more)
6. Radiohead - The Bends

5. The Wrens - The Meadowlands

4. Elvis Costello - My Aim Is True

3. The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

2. Ryan Adams - Heartbreaker

1. Wilco - Summerteeth

Let's face it, when times get rough, most people turn to an old standby song that warps perception enough by crowding it with memories to provide at least 4 to 5 minutes of respite.
Mine's David Gray's Babylon.
What's yours?

The Silversun Pickups are going to be the biggest indie band of this year. Kite Flying Society is also really, really good. No they're not--I heard one song that was great, but it sounds nothing like the rest.
Also, is this the best mashup ever? I don't know, but I like it A LOT.

on this day in 1667, "John Milton (pictured), blind and impoverished, sold the copyright of Paradise Lost for £10."
That's incredibly, monstrously depressing to me.

Also, can someone who speaks Japanese tell me what the hell they're saying and what that writing means? Thanks.

I was listening to Stevie Wonder's song, My Cherie Amour, just a moment ago and this line struck me as (probably unintentionally) hilarious:
"In a cafe or sometimes on a crowded street I've been near you, but you never notice me"
First of all, the idea of a blind stalker (Wonder is, of course, blind) is, I'm sorry, but it's true, amusing. Then, there's the fact that a woman who, for all we know has better than 20/20 vision, is unable to see said blind stalker.
What does it take to get noticed around here, huh?

Someone living in my house has a beauty product called Mask of Magnanimity. I noticed it sitting on the shelf today.
Mask of... Magnanimity? WHAT. THE. HELL.

The bookcase in my room is situated right in front of the mirror.
I have placed my books so that I can still use the mirror to look at myself, but as I pick up more books (for classes or for fun), I see less and less of myself.
Is the acquisition of knowledge (the accumulation of books) a means of decreasing vanity? I don't really think so. But it is a fun metaphor.
Aside: Listen to this artist if you have a chance. Gnarls Barkley is a collaboration between Dangermouse and Cee-Lo. It's fantastic.

So I filled out my bracket while it was being announced, then watched ESPN's Bracketology show and found out that I had picked the same Final Four as Dick Vitale, who is actually my least favorite person on earth. Damn, this is embarrassing.
[My picks were: UConn (Nat. Champ), Duke (Runner-up), Boston College, UCLA]

Grant tagged me with this, so I suppose I'm somehow obligated to complete it.
| Guilt | What is yours? | Explain yourself | | Culinary: | Onions, garlic |
They taste so good, but smell so bad. Dammit |
| Literary: | N/A | I used to read James Bond and Star Wars novels, but that stopped awhile ago. I don't even read much fiction any more. | | Audiovisual: | Jane Austen adaptations | ::shrug:: |
| Musical: | Emo pop | E.g. My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy. It makes me feel glad I'm not in high school any more. |

"The innate human revulsion against desecration is much older than any monotheism: Its most powerful expression is in the Antigone of Sophocles. It belongs to civilization. I am not asking for the right to slaughter a pig in a synagogue or mosque or to relieve myself on a "holy" book. But I will not be told I can't eat pork, and I will not respect those who burn books on a regular basis. I, too, have strong convictions and beliefs, and value the Enlightenment above any priesthood or any sacred fetish-object. It is revolting to me to breathe the same air as wafts from the exhalations of the madrasahs, or the reeking fumes of the suicide-murderers, or the sermons of Billy Graham and Joseph Ratzinger. But these same principles of mine also prevent me from wreaking random violence on the nearest church, or kidnapping a Muslim at random and holding him hostage, or violating diplomatic immunity by attacking the embassy or the envoys of even the most despotic Islamic state, or making a moronic spectacle of myself threatening blood and fire to faraway individuals who may have hurt my feelings. The babyish rumor-fueled tantrums that erupt all the time, especially in the Islamic world, show yet again that faith belongs to the spoiled and selfish childhood of our species."

I just want to explain why I bought the DVD of Garden State, as Grant mercilessly called me out in my post about hating Zach Braff, may his name be purged from my memory.
First of all, I didn't really like the movie very much. Grant and Peter can themselves attest to this; I saw it with them. However, I was captivated by Natalie Portman. I obtained a copy of Closer for the same reason, though I liked Closer.
Secondly, I was under the impression that if I gave it another chance a few months after seeing it in theaters, my disappointment might fade and I might be able to appreciate it on its own merits.
But most importantly, GIRLS OFTEN LIKE THIS MOVIE. I like girls. This is definitely one of those movies you watch with a girl because, invariably, you're cooler than Zach Braff and will benefit from the comparison, and yet, there's all this like "The Shins will change your life," yelling into a massive, fictitious canyon shit that provides the right atmosphere.
But now that I've just divulged my secret, I need to get rid of this movie. Any takers?

Not cool
Like probably most Dartmouth students, I immediately checked my facebook account to see if I had anything incriminating.
Midwesterners Rock. October Birthday People. Eagle Scouts at Dartmouth. Jacques Derrida Fan Club. Gone for Two Terms. Woody Allen Appreciation Club. A picture of me playing euchre. A few pictures of me looking for a rubbish bin in London.
God, I'm a dull person.

"Zach Braff and singer/actress Mandy Moore are reportedly heading for a wedding after the Scrubs star quietly asked her to marry him late last month. The couple are staying tight lipped about their plans, but Braff, 30, popped the question and presented Moore - his girlfriend for the past 18 months - with a $450,000, 4-carat princess-cut diamond-and-platinum Neil Lane engagement ring. Moore's past boyfriends have included tennis ace Andy Roddick and actor Wilmer Valderrama. Braff's past girlfriends are all too embarrassing to mention, which is saying something when your fiancee dated Wilmer Valderrama and Andy Roddick. Insiders tells America's In Touch magazine that the wedding is being scheduled for next April, when both stars celebrate their birthdays." (link)
So making out with Natalie Portman on camera wasn't enough, you no-talent Northwestern grad who failed script-writing and barely manages to, while acting, run the gamut of emotions from x to y?
Disclaimer: The above sentiments are not meant as any sort of slight to Northwestern University. I am, however, sort of pissed that they beat Dartmouth on the PCPC Index (Popped Collars Per Capita) last year.

On Mary J. Blige's newest record, there is a recording of her "duet" with Bono at the Hurricane Rita relief concert, singing "One." "Duet" is in quotation marks because Bono does not deserve to be on the same fucking stage as her.
"One" is perhaps the most beautiful, moving song of the 90s, and Mary just steals its entire fucking soul and makes it her own.
Wow, just wow.
